Adopt a Pile

There are more than 150 alder or oak trees, each 8 to 10 metres in height, forming the stilts or piles that support the Crannog reconstruction's timber platform. Monitoring the exposure to severe wave action and winds of up to 100 mph or more indicates the average pile lasts between 5 and 10 years. Several have been replaced already, but many more are required. You can help by donating funds to cover the cost of felling, hauling, replacing, or monitoring a pile. Currently this ranges from £50 to £250, depending upon the activity, the timber's species, and the location of the timber within the building. Should you wish, your name or company will be noted on a master plan in the Visitor Centre and on these pages showing the location of sponsored piles. Please contact us for details.
