Underwater Archaeology

Unless otherwise stated, all events are an optional extra and take place at the Scottish Crannog Centre. Most cost £3 or £4 over the normal admission price. Normal admission includes entry to the exhibition, guided crannog tour, and standard hands-on crafts. If visitors wish to participate in one of these daytime events only, without a crannog tour, the cost is £5 per person. Booking is not required unless stated. To book: tel. (+44) (0)1887 830583. ACTIVE AUTUMN 2011

SEPTEMBER IS SCOTTISH ARCHAEOLOGY MONTH

Monday, 5th September, 2011: Hands On science 11am - 4pm. Special exhibits on current research & new discoveries. Meet scientists, use microscopes, handle archaeological material,  and get a feel for underwater archaeology.

Sunday, 11th September, 2011: Ancient Pots and Firing 11am - 4pm. Learn about prehistoric pottery from expert Graham Taylor of www.potted-history.co.uk, make & decorate your own pot, and see the firing of pots prepared earlier. Normal admission fee + £4 or £6 if event only.

 

Thursday, 13th October, 2011: Cran-apple and Cider Festival 11am-4:30pm. Bring in your apples to press and a container to collect your juice; taste Scottish cider and learn about Scottish apples. Sun. 16th October, 2011: Fire and Food - Primitive Pyrotechnia and Fungi Fun. 11-4:30pm. Strike a spark and discover the many methods of fire-making without matches, the best tinder, and wild cooking with fungi Bring mushrooms for identification to learn what is safe and what is not. Sunday, 30th October, 2011: Celtic Samhain Music & Storytelling Night from 6 - 8pm – Sit around the protective Crannog fire for music, ancient myths and legends in preparation for the Samhain and Celtic New Year celebrations.  Enjoy hot soup, baked apples, and special Samhain exhibition. Booking essential £7.50 for Adults and £4.00 for Children

Monday 31st October, 2011: Spooks and Sacrifice
Annual Celtic Samhain Festival
6-8pm.
Come dressed in costume and help us celebrate this ancient Celtic Halloween festival. Bring a lantern; join our torch lit procession through loch-side woods. Watch our wicker ram burn in ceremonial sacrifice and enjoy storytelling, apple-ducking, hot soup and fire shows. Sunday, 13th November, 2011: World of Wood Fair from 11am - 4pm - Woodland craft demonstrations, hands-on sessions and gift market with green woodworking, pyrography, basket making, and hazel hurdle making. Normal admissions + £4 or £5 if event only.

Sunday, 20th November, 2011: Autumn Harvest Food & Drink Fair from 11am - 4pm - Celebrate autumn gold by the fire and sample stews, fish, soup, breads and spreads and seasonally foraged food. Normal admissions + £4 or £5 if event only.

Saturday, 3rd December, 2011: Aberfeldy Christmas Market 10m-3pm. Join us and locl businesses in the town centre for some pre-Christmas fun and games. Special stocking fillers, costumes, and feel-good atmosphere promises fun for all ages.

Saturday, 3rd December, 2011: Fun Day@ the AK Bell Library in Perth Visit our stand for lots of hands-on crafts and dressing up for the Iron Age. Use a Bronze Age-style drill to make a pendant; stitch leather to make a pouch; and spin wool or weave fleece to make a woolly mat. 3 Sessions throughout the day from 10am - 3pm. All materials provided on a first come, first-serve basis.
